A glamorous night for heart health

Wednesday, January 11th, 2012

vogue knitting live 2012 new york charity auction jordana paige rio collage Vogue Knitting LIVE happens this weekend in New York, and although we’re not going to have a booth there, we’ll be there in spirit as part of the Cocktail Reception and LIVE Charity Auction on Sunday night.

Partnering with Stitch Red and The Heart Truth®, the event promises to be a one-of-a kind experience, and we don’t doubt it. A historic bus tour, champagne, beautiful dresses and a silent auction designed for knitters. Among the items up for bid: an original Nicky Epstein painting, a bound leather case of Elizabeth Zimmermann’s own needles and a trip to Scotland and Iceland on the 2012 Vogue Knitting Tour featuring Alice Starmore and Ysolda Teague valued at $6,000.

We’ve donated a Rio as part of the auction, which will benefit the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health in support of The Heart Truth® and women’s heart health education and research.

Visit the Vogue Knitting LIVE events page for more details.

A Simple Dress for a Big Smile

Wednesday, December 28th, 2011

Since the earthquake in Haiti, my friend and a team of talented ladies have organized HOPE Art. It’s a project that uses art as therapy for Haitian children in tent camps, schools, orphanages & hospitals. This January they will be making their third trip down to Haiti and they’ll be bringing something extra–homemade dresses.

pillow case dresses for haiti

This weekend I got together with my little sis and we whipped up a few pillowcase dresses for the project. These dresses are so simple! I used this pattern, but a search for pillowcase dresses will pull up several versions. I also used this chart to determine the length since I don’t have a little one to measure. This is a great project for kids to make. It’s a lot of straight line sewing. The most tricky part was sewing the bias tape on the armholes. You may need to assist with that part. I also love this pattern because it’s so versatile in sizing. Once it’s too small to be a dress, it can be worn as a tunic over some shorts or pants. So cute!

Take action: Eat, knit and be merry for a good cause

Thursday, October 20th, 2011

We’ve all heard the phrase Actions speak louder than words, and here at Jordana Paige we love to encourage that mentality. While it’s great to talk about how we support early detection of breast cancer, it’s more fun when we can help others take action as well.

That’s why we’re proud to say that our Knitter’s Satchel will be a door prize at Knit Wits Yarn Shop’s wine tasting and breast cancer fundraiser next week, Thursday, October 27, from 6 to 8:30 p.m.

If you’ll be anywhere near the Elk Creek Vineyards in Crestview Hills, Kentucky, try to make it for this exciting event. You’ll get a skein of pink Berroco Comfort and pattern to knit a chemo cap while sampling eight different wines and having a light dinner. Sounds divine!

And it’s for a worthy cause. Money raised from this event will go to I Have Wings, an organization that helps ease the financial burden on already struggling families by paying for much needed prostheses, electric bills, mammograms, food, clothing, wigs, school supplies, haircuts and more.

You can contact Knit Wits Yarn Shop at (859)341-2423 for more information and to get tickets. Thanks to Knit Wits Yarn Shop for their actions to help support breast cancer research and those affected by it. Kudos!

Spread the word: Take care of yourself.

knitters satchel in pinkAlthough we all have our own reasons for loving it (fall in full swing, baseball playoffs), everyone seems to adore October. This month has got it going on!

October is also National Breast Cancer Awareness month as well.

While we donate 10 percent of sales from the Knitter’s Satchel in pink to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, we want to remind everyone to perform monthly exams and learn about early detection and prevention. Let’s take care of ourselves so we can knit another day!

All hail the power of the purse!

Monday, August 15th, 2011

Did you know that vintage and couture handbags can do more than just make you feel like a more fabulous version of yourself? They can help someone in treatment for breast cancer pay for groceries. Or help with the electric bill.

The seventh annual This Old Bag: The Power of the Purse will be held on October 21 at the St. Regis in San Francisco; purses and bags are auctioned off with 100 percent of the proceeds going to the Breast Cancer Emergency Fund, a non-profit organization that provides funds for low-income people battling breast cancer.

Jordana Paige is proud to be a part of this great cause; the Rio in black will be auctioned off with more than 200 other designer bags, from designer labels to chic computer bags. The event will include entertainment, appetizers and beverages, which should make for a luxurious guilt-free shopping experience.

Interested in being a philanthropist shopper? Tickets for the event go on sale today. Be stunning and giving, all at once!

Knitter in Need Fundraising Event

Tuesday, July 20th, 2010

A couple of our favorite local yarn shops, Bobbin’s Nest and Green Planet Yarn are teaming up to host a fund raiser to provide financial support for a family in need. There’s tons going on and Jordana Paige is jumping in to help!

ABOUT THE KNITTER IN NEED
Two years ago our Knitter underwent some very difficult and painful surgeries. She was in the hospital more than she was out. Everyone worried and yet she put on a brave face and carried on like the trooper that she is. Due to the time away from her job she was let go. As she searched for a job the medical bills rolled in and times were lean. After many months of pounding the pavement she found a job that she loves. 2008 was not great, but life was looking up.

Last year her father-in-law, a machinist, was hit in the head with a piece of flying metal and almost died. He had massive head trauma that resulted in brain surgery and he is no longer able to work. He spent months in the hospital and rehabilitation facility. He was able to move home, but alas, he’s not the man they knew. Ok, well, 2009 wasn’t much better than 2008, but could it get worse?

Two weeks ago her mother-in-law, who was working full-time AND taking care of the father, suffered a brain aneurysm which also resulted in major brain surgery. The parents are now both unable to work and function normally. There currently is no permanent solution to where they are going to live during the healing process.

Medical bills abound, care is needed, and time, energy, and finances are slim. “A Knitter in Need” deserves the Nest indeed.

SILENT AUCTION
Bobbin’s Nest will be holding a silent auction of store samples from now until Sunday, August 1 at 4pm. Included in the samples are Jordana Paige’s Jackie Skirt from Big Girl Knits and Hot Cocoa Jacket from More Big Girl Knits. These are the samples from the photo shoot for the books. They are sizes Large and 1X respectively. You don’t have to be local to bid. Call Bobbin’s Nest Studio at 408.246.1121.

Amazing Olivia

Thursday, June 17th, 2010

Olivia Bouler, 11 years old, wrote the Audubon Society a letter offering to sell paintings of birds to raise money to help clean up the oil spill. Word spread and she has now raised over $100,000. What an inspiration! Stories such as hers overwhelm me with how one person really does have the ability to make a difference. Olivia has reached her limit of 500 original paintings and is now selling prints. To read her full story, see her work and learn how you can make a donation, click here. Be sure to watch the video. She’s such a sweet girl. And of course, help spread the word by becoming a fan on Facebook.

Unwanted Yarn Can Clean Up Oil Spill

Thursday, May 13th, 2010

clean up oil spill with yarn We shampoo our hair because it collects oil. This principle is the reason why hair can be used to clean up oil spills. Matter of Trust is an organization collecting hair to create booms–nylons filled with hair to act as sponges. Watch this video to see how it works. Crazy, huh? Here’s where you can help.

Send in any of your unwanted roving or yarn made from natural hair, such as wool, alpaca, etc. They’re also collecting nylons, even if they have small runs in them, and human hair. Over 300,000 pounds of hair are cut each day in the US, so ask you local hair salon and pet groomer to start collecting the hair they cut to send in. Details here.
