Draping class is loads of fun so far!

Tuesday, February 6th, 2007

I’m really enjoying my draping class. Last week we measured our dress forms and marked them with the bust, waist and hip lines. Yesterday we started draping. So far it’s very basic, just a fitted bodice with a dart in the front and two in the back. It’s definitely as much fun as I always thought it would be. We’ll see if I’m saying this in a couple weeks when the fabric stops behaving though.

The supply list for the class very long and while we each have our own dress form there aren’t lockers for us to store all the supplies in. What’s a girl to do? Use a Jordana Paige of course. I was so tickled when I grabbed a bag and saw how my draping tools fit perfectly, like I had designed it for such a use all along.

I’m heading back to class

I’m so excited, I’ve signed up for a draping class at the local JC. Draping is one way of making a pattern (like how the designers on Project Runway make their garments).

I’ve been wanting to take a draping class since high school. When I was in college classes were offered, but since I was a business major, not a design major the class wasn’t a priority. It always conflicted with my required classes. It will be fun to take a class because I want to, not because I have to. Class starts next Monday.

Teaching in different parts of life and California

Monday, January 30th, 2006

It’s been too long since my last post. I think I must have forgotten I have a blog.

Last weekend was my preview in sunny San Diego. It was a great weekend. I was able to meet many of the shop owners, designers and press people I’d only ever corresponded with by phone or email.

This week is full of activity. It’s always nice to break up the work week. Tomorrow and Thursday I teach my first class at Commuknity. The class is “The Perfect Fit”. I’ll teach how to properly measure your body, how to substitute yarns (understanding fibers and gauge), short row shaping and other methods to adjusting a pattern.

Friday I am going back to my hometown. My high school sewing teacher, Mrs. Brancato, was a huge inspiration for me to pursue a career in the fashion industry. She presented careers I hadn’t even considered. Mrs. Brancato is the type of amazing teacher that does more than just teach the standard curriculum. She would bring guest speakers into the class to tell us about various areas of the industry. Now things have turned and ever since I started my company I’ve been a guest speaker.

Then I’ll be hanging around town to help my mom who is the Monterey Bay corridinator of Project Linus. Sunday is Blanket Day. Project Linus is a non-profit organization that provides new, handmade and washable blankets to children 0-19 who are seriously ill or traumatized. We’ll be making blankets all day long. If you’re in the area, please stop by. All the details are here. If you’re interested in participating with your local chapter, visit the Project Linus website for a listing of chapters.
