Knitcircus takes us into a time warp

Monday, May 21st, 2012

Time zones confused me as a child; I thought that you could literally travel backwards in time the more west you headed. While time travel might not quite be possible, sometimes just looking at some old photos or listening to an album from decades earlier can transport you to that time.

With that in mind, check out an interview Jordana did with KnitCircus last October. They had some technical difficulties and didn’t get it out until much later, which is why we’re hearing it now.

Click on the link to hear the Jordana_Paige_Interview and if you use your imagination, you might go back in time a little bit.

JP bags: Knitter tested, pet approved

Monday, February 27th, 2012

While we’re always stoked to hear and read about people who love our products, there’s something special about getting the stamp of approval from one of the most important members of our crafty families: our pets.

Over the years we’ve had people show us how their furry friends love Jordana Paige bags, and we’re happy to say that the Crafter’s Tool Butler has quickly joined the fold.

1) Thanks to Whaledaughter for sharing the newest photo! 2) Thanks to Barbara B for her two photos of her kitty. 3) That’s Lani who has such good taste in handbags. 4) Sweet Olivia. 5) Here’s Bailey.

How would you style your fair isle?

Friday, February 3rd, 2012

Jordana told me this summer that she’d really like to knit was Norwegian fair isle if she had a long, relaxing vacation to spend her time working on all the detail. And fair isle was the inspiration for Shane, as well.

It seems like fair isle is on more than just the minds of those at JP HQ; fair isle fashion features are everywhere.

These looks were in Toronto’s The Globe and Mail and London’s The Guardian. When it comes to rocking fair isle, I’m partial to one piece at a time, but runway trends point to layering. What’s your preference?

JP bags: Worth the weight

Monday, January 30th, 2012

Not every woman has back and neck problems, but if you’re one of the unlucky ones who do, your handbag is something that requires major consideration. I know; an injury a few years ago sidelined several of my favorites. I had to reconsider my entire style.

One thing I learned quickly was that because women carry loads of stuff in our purses, the weight of a purse when empty is really important. Oprah’s chiropractor says we shouldn’t carry more than 10% of our weight in purse. Some handbags can weigh more than 8 pounds (3.6 kilos)!

When I first started, Jordana told me that many people commented on how light her bags were. And after toting around the Rio and Bella for awhile, I decided to weigh them all because she’s right! Compared to my other bags, I felt like I was forgetting something they were so light and I’m carrying knitting now.

Every one of Jordana Paige’s bags is under 3 pounds (1.36 kilos), and three styles are under 2 pounds (.9 kilos). To give you an idea, here are a few things that weigh under 3 pounds:

An emu egg, a pool cue, an Olympic Gold medal, a human brain, an NCAA basketball and a spectacled owl.

Thank goodness for Jordana Paige bags! They’ve kept me out of the world of style-less fanny packs and they’re chiropractor approved (by mine anyway) as long as I don’t load them up with soup cans or anything else super heavy. Yarn’s so light it doesn’t really count, right?

Getting crafty with JP in Santa Cruz

Friday, December 30th, 2011

While it may seem like between Donna’s interview and the latest issue of entangled magazine, we’ve been chomping at the bit to get out of town. But really, we know we’re blessed to call Santa Cruz home, especially as a crafty sort. There’s plenty to do here.

One of the cool things about working in a crafty industry is that sometimes work and play can cross over. Jordana and I had one of these days a while ago. We thought it would be fun to take you on a virtual tour of some of our favorite sites in Santa Cruz.

First Stop: Yarns By The Sea in Aptos

Yarns By The Sea, Aptos

This is where I first learned about yarn bombing. Oh my gosh, I love knitters. And yarn shops. We said hello to the owner Chrissy, did some official JP business and then proceeded to ooh and ahhh over pretty things for awhile.

Next Stop: Bunny’s in Santa Cruz

This place is pretty legendary if you like to shop, are at all girlie and live near Santa Cruz. From cute jeans and shoes to a book on the nuances of the cycling community and glittery everything, I could buy up the store in a heartbeat.

Bunny's Downtown Santa Cruz

Thankfully, I had plans for the money burning a hole in my pocket, and we were getting hungry. Isn’t it funny how shopping can work up such an appetite?

Lunch Stop: Cafe Limelight in Downtown Santa Cruz

One of Jordana’s favorites, this little gem makes the best paninis I’ve ever had, and that’s saying something since I don’t eat them with cheese anymore. The menu has so many awesome options as well as a dog menu! Pooches are welcome if you decide to sit on the patio, which we did since it was so sunny and lovely.

After lunch we decided we better get back on craft task. Jordana needed a clasp for the bracelet she made.

Next Stop: Monkey Girl Beads in Santa Cruz

Whether you’re into creating jewelry or not, this store is beautiful! Anyone who enjoys art will love visiting. And the shop itself is full of light and has so much nice space.

While I wandered around in absolute delight snapping photos, Jordana chatted with the women working. She needed a clasp, she said, and showed them her beaded cuff.

The two started suggesting different clasps and one of them said, “Did you knit this? How cool is that?”

After we got everything we came for, we decided we’d better head across the street. Jordana needed buttons for a baby dress she was knitting and I needed yarn for my afghan.

Next Stop: Hart’s Fabric in Santa Cruz

This place seems to have everything, like eco-friendly upholstery! I know this because a man my grandpa’s age wandered in while we were there and asked for some. What a cool shop! (Note: They have an online store as well.)

We left with our loot and decided to head back to our neck of the woods, the west side of Santa Cruz. And since we’re giving you a tour, why not take the scenic route?

Turns out the Cold Water Classic surf contest was going on, so we saw a lot more surfers than scenery, which isn’t really a bad thing. But enough with the distractions. Onward!

Next Stop: The Swift Stitch in Santa Cruz

As if we weren’t blessed enough here in this paradise, we have an LYS within walking distance from the warehouse. I’m pretty sure Jordana planned it that way.

This particular LYS is in a small space, but somehow they manage to pack tons of stuff in here without making it seem cluttered or uncomfortable. I got my first pair of circular needles on this particular trip.

In fact, it sort of has the opposite effect. I want to grab a cup of coffee, hunker down and spend the day knitting in this cozy little shop.  And to get that cup of coffee you only have to head across the courtyard.

Last Stop: Kelly’s French Bakery in Santa Cruz

Lunch. Coffee. Dessert. There is always a reason to go to Kelly’s. And it’s also within walking distance. Joy!

Because we all know every crafty type needs a sugar rush now and then, there’s no reason to not include Kelly’s on our tour. That and it’s just fun to look at pretty food too.

Thanks for spending some time with us around Santa Cruz. Do you have a crafty place you’d love to show off? Feeling inspired? Do your own craft tour and we’ll post it on our blog.  Email or leave your info in the comments and we’ll make it happen!

Close to the Twin Cities? Get close to our handbags.

Thursday, December 1st, 2011

There’s a phrase that goes, I’ll know it when I see it. When it comes to buying something online, seeing isn’t always believing because colors can look different on monitors, and although Jordana does a nice job of showing us what’s inside with her product videos, you don’t get to hold or open the product.

That’s why having our products in LYS across the country (and the world) is so important to us. And just in time for the holidays, 3 Kittens Needle Arts in Mendota Heights, Minnesota is hosting a giant cash and carry trunk show of Jordana Paige’s handbags. From December 2-23, you can see the exact colors of our bags, open and close them and envision yourself knitting fabulous things with your spectacular bag.

If you’re anywhere near the Twin Cities, I highly suggest checking this out, and not just because I’m a extremely biased JP fan. When I head back to Minnesota, 3 Kittens is definitely on my short list of LYS to visit.

I adore their Desperate Gifters series for Knitters and Crocheters, and members of their loyalty program, the 3K Club, get 20% off their retail prices at trunk shows. Check out the blog for what’s “mew” and follow them on Facebook and Twitter.

But most importantly, head on over to the shop during the trunk show December 2 through December 23. When it comes to finding the right JP bag for you, you’ll know it when you see it.

It’s good to share.

New toys are always fun to play with, but aren’t they even more fun to share? That’s how we felt when we found Pinterest. It’s a great toy online that is similar to other social bookmarking sites like Stumbleupon, but it’s much more visual and nice to look at.

It’s so inspiring to see all these beautiful craft and fashion ideas, but it’s even cooler to see what other people are sharing.

jordana paige pinterestYou could easily get lost on this site for hours. It’s full of beautiful things and great ideas. You can follow Jordana Paige (and invite your friends as well) to see what we’re looking at and drooling over. Inspiration abounds–find yours!

No more boring bicycle baskets!

Monday, August 29th, 2011

modcloth diy bike basketWe’re definitely a bike riding office, whether it’s to work or just to the beach. And while riding a bike can be loads of fun, it wasn’t exactly designed with fashion in mind.

That’s why we are loving ModCloth’s Pedal Pretty series, which has great crafty ideas about how to make your bike and your gear more fun.

There are posts on how to decoupage your helmet, make wristlets to daintily wipe your brow, but my favorite is this adorable basket liner.  It keeps everything inside and those ribbons just add the perfect amount of girlie to it.

What’s on your back-to-school list?

Friday, August 5th, 2011
emmery knitting pattern

Can you believe it’s August already? I don’t know about you, but if I don’t pay attention, weeks can go by in the bat of an eye. That’s why I thought it would be a good time to start talking about what you can make your kids, siblings, friends or yourself as a back-to-school treat.

I’m thinking the Emmery makes an adorable addition to any wardrobe, and it transitions nicely from summer to fall to winter (throw a cute long sleeve underneath for those really chilly days).

Or if you’re looking for something quick and easy, you can never go wrong with Mila.  And if knitting isn’t on your radar right now (in some areas people can’t even look at yarn without sweating), the Knitter’s Messenger Bag is a great bag for the college-bound knitter. It could hold up to a 17″ laptop (although we recommend putting it in a padded sleeve first).

But what about the non-hat-wearing friend or the brother who’d rather not don a decidedly feminine item? I thought the Fall issue of KnitSimple had some really good looking ideas, in particular Veronica Manno’s striped blanket and Loretta Dachman’s phone and tablet covers, which are both practical and unisex.

Being a student is tough and sending them off with well-made, thoughtful gifts might not make algebra easier, but it will definitely brighten their day. What about you? Are you knitting a gift for a student? Or are you a student who got a great gift (or has a good idea for a gift you haven’t gotten yet)? Spill! I’d like to know!

Cut Out + Keep

Tuesday, June 21st, 2011

Cut Out + Keep photoEver discover an amazing website only to wonder how you could not have known about it for the past few years? That’s how I felt today when I came across Cut Out + Keep. Cut Out + Keep is a community of crafty people sharing their projects, but even better, they include step-by-step tutorials. I could seriously get lost on this site for hours, but I stopped myself to write this post. Now I won’t feel guilty because I’ve turned my browsing time into a productive means of sharing with you!

I absolutely LOVE craftiness and seeing what people come up with. There’s everything from clothing to recipes to the kitchen sink (well, maybe just how to make a marble backsplash behind your sink). Check it out and share your own projects.
